Backstage roles with Adel Players
Jobs Galore with Adel Players!
Here in Adel Players we are blessed with a wealth of acting talent, and it goes without saying that this is a crucial ingredient in the success of our shows. “Behind the scenes”, however, there are many other essential facets to putting a show together. If you would like to join us, but have no ambition to "tread the boards", there are many different ways you can get involved. In no particular order, these are:
- Costumes. Sourcing the right costume for the actors makes a huge difference to the look and feel of a show, and it can be great fun hunting for that bargain in the charity shops or researching the odd costume that just needs to be hired or otherwise procured. Mending and altering skills are invaluable and actors really appreciate clothes that are not at risk of dropping off!
- Props. Resourcefulness and invention are the key attributes here. It can make a big difference to actors having props early on in a rehearsal run so they can get used to handling them. Help with sourcing items is important but so also is having an organised approach to ensuring the right prop is in the right place at the right time. Perhaps the easiest way to earn the eternal gratitude of any actor!
- Set Build. Someone remarked that this is the most fun you can have with your clothes on! It can be fairly concentrated work at times, but we always make sure that there is time to relax and socialise, usually over a nice lunch. Bonhomie and good humour are the order of the day for these sessions, as well as getting the great results that our audiences and actors alike so appreciate. Practical skills are helpful, but it is amazing how much of these can be acquired on the job.
- Poster and programme design. We are always looking for creatives/artists to help “put our best foot forward” to the public. These same skills are also invaluable when it comes to set design and scenery painting, which can really give a show that polished and professional feeling.
- Technical (Sound and Lighting). Don’t be frightened! Many of us who have done these jobs have learnt from scratch, and there is always a guiding hand for those just starting. For those of a more technical bent, we have just completed a £36,000 project to convert our lighting to the modern industry standard of LED. This opens up fantastic creative opportunities, and it would be great to have someone keen to exploit these.
- Front of House. We all know what a difference it makes when you get a warm welcome in any theatre venue. We have won commendations for this in the past, and any help in supporting the audience experience is always appreciated.
- Prompt. Last, but very much not least, the Prompt truly is the “unsung hero” of any production. Celebrated most when never heard from, the reassurance that a good and reliable prompt can give is crucial for the actors. Some acting experience is valuable but not necessarily essential. The saintly virtues of patience, infallible concentration and complete unflappability are really the only requirements!
If you are interested in getting to know more about these various roles, don’t hesitate to shout up. The success of what we do is fundamentally all about teamwork and all recruits are very warmly welcome.
